A lot of drivers experience the ‘sophomore slump’ during their second year of full time racing, and at the beginning of the year 16-year-old Michael Pope might have agreed with that lore.  That’s not the case anymore as the youngster continued his streak of solid finishes as he was able to bring home a 12th place finish at the Georgia Asphalt Event held at Lanier National Speedway this past Saturday.

“It was a nerve-racking race,” said Pope.  “There were a lot of wrecks
and we had to try and miss them.  It is just when you are trying to
pass and trying to keep it on the bottom the car just breaks loose
and the cars on the outside don’t allow you to run up to wall like you
need to and it just messes up your line an it is really hard to pass.

“12th is a lot better than what we had finished before here at Lanier,
so I am pretty happy.”

“I am really excited about going back to Peach State,” added Pope.
“I think we will do really well there.  The past few weeks we have
been really good, We have had one top-five, two top-tens and now
we have a top-15.  In the beginning of the year we had somewhat of
a slump but we seem to be over it now so hopefully we can just go
get them next week.”

The Georgia Asphalt Series event at Peach State Speedway will get underway this Saturday September 30th with racing action beginning at 7:00 pm.
