Pope Grabs Sixth-Place At South Alabama Speedway
Georgia Driver Gets Out Of Gas For SAS Rattler PLM Race
“The track just really works with the drivers well,” said Pope. “The people are really nice. The new asphalt makes it a lot of fun to race on. We don’t do a lot of racing outside of GAS, but this is a place we like to go race. We’ll probably race with them for the rest of the year.”
Pope will be back in action with the Georgia Asphalt Series this weekend at Peachstate Speedway. He has two fifth-place finishes there this season already.
Michael Pope just likes to race. Pope took his off weekend from the Georgia Asphalt Series to compete in the Viper Pro Late Model Series event at South Alabama Speedway . Pope qualified fourth, but started seventh (following the redraw) and came home sixth in the 100-lap event.
“The car was really good after practice on Friday night,” said Pope. “We tried a softer setup and that helped quite a bit. We put a locker rearend in it and that helped too. We got the car setup for the night conditions. On Saturday, we didn’t practice other than to go out and make sure the transponder was working.
“We qualified fourth. The top seven had to redraw, and of course, I drew seventh. We rode in sixth for the entire race after that. The car just wasn’t as good as we were hoping it would be in the race. That is all we could really get out of it. It was kind of disappointing.”
This was the third time that Pope had raced at South Alabama Speedway this season. He finished fourth there earlier in the year and 14th in his other event (where he ran most of the night in the top-five before getting involved in an accident with a lapped car).
