“After we spun my crew came on the radio and said don’t let it get you down. I knew we had a good car. We got lucky there at the end a caution came out and we got to pass a lot of cars. I saw the leaders, Bubba (Pollard) and Paul (Kelley) spinning and I went high and shifted up into third gear and we came out pretty clean. We thought we came home fourth but we still got a top ten after the revised rundown.”
Pope will be back in action on July 7th when he heads to South Alabama Speedway for the VIPER Series event.
Saturday night at the latest Georgia Asphalt Series event at Peachstate Speedway (GA), it looked as if it might be his best race yet to try and claim the victory. For a large part of the race he rode in the second position behind leader Russell Fleeman. For several of those laps they ran side by side and Pope looked to be a fierce contender for the win.
“We went just a little too fast early on,” said Pope. “We went up high to save some rubber but after a while we had burnt them off pretty good.”
Pope settled into the top-five for the latter part of the race. Waiting to be there when it counted, but then late in the race his streak of top-10 runs looked to be in jeopardy when his No. 44 machine went for a spin with 20 laps to go. But the young driver was able to rebound from that and through quick moves and quick thinking, bring home a 9th place finish.
