So far in 2007, even on his bad days, Michael Pope is good. His latest finish of 10th in the Georgia Asphalt Series proves just that. The car might not have been handling exactly the way that he wanted it to at his home track of Watermelon Capital Speedway (GA), but he was able to tough it out and bring home another top-10 run.
Pope Grabs Another Top-10 Run In Chase For Championship
Youngster The Only GAS Driver In Top-10 All Season Long
“The car would not turn in the center,” said Pope. “We tried some different things with the way I was driving the car. We were just too tight in the middle and that made us loose off.”
What makes Pope’s feat even more impressive is that he has been in the top-10 for every single GAS race so far this year. And he is the only driver in the series to have done so; pretty impressive for a 17-year-old.
“It’s really impressive to me that we have the ability to set the cars up well enough to run good every week,” added Pope. “Tonight was just an off night for us; we missed the set up a little bit. The heat really took a toll on us. After the race, me and Kevin Stephens got out of the car and went over and sat in front of this huge fan trying to cool off. Tonight was the hottest I have been in a race car.”
The weather might have been hot, but Pope’s streak as hotter as he continues his championship quest for the 2007 Georgia Asphalt Series Championship, with the next event coming June 23rd at Peachstate.
