In a season that already has been one of the most memorable in Michael Pope’s young career, it got just a little bit more special with a second-place finish in the Snowflake 100 at the historic Snowball Derby Weekend in Pensacola Florida.
Michael Pope Scores Second in the Snowflake 100
Snowflake Rookie Makes Most Out of Historic Weekend
“My spotter kept telling me to save my tires and don’t burn my brakes up. I was just trying to let my car roll as much as it could. The car just stayed awesome all night. We used Grant Enfinger’s pit crew and they were able to get us out third after the pit stops. That was key to getting us up front.”
Pope was able to stay in the top-three throughout the rest of the race, and was able to get by Augie Grill in the closing laps to bring home his second place finish. And second in any race is an impressive feat, but to come home second in one as competitive and prestigious as the Snowflake 100 is even more so.
Pope headed to the Snowball Derby weekend with a lot of momentum from his 2007 Georgia Asphalt Series season, and he did not disappoint from the moment he arrived at Five Flags Speedway.
“The weekend got started off a little different than we had hoped,” said Pope. “We had a little bit of a disappointment in tech and we lost a lap of qualifying after the roof was too low. We ended up starting the race from the 23rd spot.”
While Pope may have started the race from the 23rd spot, he had no intentions of staying there. Throughout the race, he worked his way up through the field and when the time came for pit stops he was able to put himself in position to take advantage of the fact that he had a great team behind him.
“I owe it all to my team because we had a really good car all night. We were really good on old tires, we weren’t that great on new tires but we were awesome on old rubber.
Michael Pope was pleased with his second place finish at Five Flags Speedway.
“The prestige here is overwhelming,” added Pope. “Just to come here and race where so many big names have run, it’s amazing. This means a lot to me, to finish second in a race as big as this.
And as any driver knows, none of their racing success would be possible without the help of family and sponsors.
“All I can do is thank my team and friends and family for everything that they did for us this season I just want to thank my sponsors, Builder’s Concrete Products, I want to thank the Children’s Miracle Network and the Children’s Hospital for their support. As well as my parents and my whole crew, who have always been there for me. All I can do is thank them for everything that they did for us this season and I am really looking forward to getting started on next season and seeing what the future holds.” “
