Once a year, the nation’s best short track racers converge on Pensacola, Florida to a short track called Five Flags Speedway for the Snowball Derby Weekend. There, two major races are held, The Snowflake 100 and the Snowball Derby, and for both events, the who’s who of short track racing all show up hoping to add their names to the prestigious list of winners.
Pope Is Ready to Roll into Snowball Derby Weekend
Young Driver Will Compete in Snowflake 100 Event
Speedway. He has previously competed in the Georgia Asphalt Series event there, and he was successful too - bringing home a solid top-10 finish
“I am really excited about running the Snowflake 100. Pensacola (Five Flags Speedway) is a fun track and one that we have some experience on. Earlier this year when we were down there for the Georgia Asphalt Series race we had a pretty good run. We learned a lot about setup. I think that we should be able to take some of the things we learned and put them to good use as we head down there this time. Hopefully we will be able to better our finish by a few spots and bring home the win.”
This year, Michael Pope will be making the journey down to Pensacola to compete in his first ever Snowball Derby Weekend. He will compete in the Snowflake 100 Pro Late Model event on Saturday, where he hopes to be able to add his name to the history books with those who have won on that famous weekend in December.
“I am really excited to be heading down to Five Flags Speedway,” said Pope. “The Snowflake 100 and the Snowball Derby are such prestigious races, and there are a lot of big names who race in them and who come down to watch it.”
While it will be Pope’s first trip to the Snowball Derby Weekend, it won’t be his first appearance at Five Flags
The 2007 season has already been one for the books for young Michael Pope. He was a championship contender in the Georgia Asphalt Series all season long and he brought home his first GAS victory at one of his favorite tracks, Peachstate Speedway. To add a victory at Five Flags Speedway would be the icing on top of the cake to end the 2007 season.
“We know what it feels like to win now and I know that it would mean a lot to win the Snowflake 100,” added Pope. “It would mean a lot to me but I would really want to win it for my parents, for everything they have done for me and my racing career.
“There is a lot of pressure, on me at least, to perform good this weekend. I know drivers who have won the races in the past have had opportunities arise from it, but you can’t let it get to you. You just have to focus on doing your best, and hopefully winning the race, and hope that the rest falls into place “
The Snowflake 100 is set for December 1st at Five Flags Speedway in Florida. The race will get underway at 7:00pm local time.
